Zippos Majestic Angel (Angel) & Zips Sierra Te (Si Si) born on 4/28/2009 & me (Ardis). Gentle as can be & just as sweet! Si Si is close to being as tall as her mom already. I will start her training this spring after it warms up instead of bringing her into the heated barn/arena this winter. I'll let her just be a "weaner" for now.
Today's training tip: As mentioned yesterday, horse-human relationships begin on the ground. Let's say your horse bumps into you while you're leading him. Immediately turn to face him (stand next to his head). Choke up on the lead line so that your hand is a couple inches below the clip. Put pressure on the lead rope by aiming your hand toward the center of his chest. Keep the pressure heavy & steady until he backs up.If he won't back up, poke your finger/thumb of your free hand into his chest or point of his shoulder. Once he starts backing up, keep him backing til he starts to do it on his own by releasing all tension & resistance from his body. You can feel anything from a very slight to a very obvious release of pressure on your lead rope. Your horse's head will become lower, he might sigh, lick & chew or blow air through his nose. All of these are signs that he is beginning to see you as the leader instead of him. This all takes time. It won't happen over night. Every time he gets "pushy"; apply this tactic. Be consistent!
Time for barn chores so happy trails til tomorrow from Rock Solid Arena, LLC
