There's a right & a wrong way to give treats to your horse. Food treats help a horse work happy & learn faster, but make sure you're giving them the correct way without causing more problems. Have you ever heard someone say, "I won't treat my horse cuz it'll make him bite." If he bites, you're giving it wrong. I've seen folks take a hand full of grain & hand it to the horse. The horse takes a bite & the hand goes away. Then the horse is handed more treats & the hand goes away. After five or six times of this, the horse will take a bite of grain & a chomp from the palm of your hand. You've just been successful in teaching him to bite. You keep pulling his food away & he will be aggressive in trying to get it back.
To feed properly, hold your hand out with enough grain that can be eaten in 4 seconds. Make sure he eats all the grain, cleans it up & knows it's all gone. If you do that, your horse will never bite the palm of your hand. Don't blame the treats when you are not using them right.
More on this issue tomorrow...
No, she wasn't tired. Pa (Lawrence Smith) and me (Ardis - age 14) were training my mare to lay down on command. No abuse - ever! I must have had a date that night - all gussied up in hair curlers! I still wear shorts when I train (if it's summer & hot) and my Harley boots. After two broken big toes, I learned!!
