Today's Riding Tip

To wear - or not to wear a helmet. I've heard many people question, "Do I really need to wear a helmet? My hair gets plastered to my head!" Helmets can save your life and help prevent a life in a wheelchair. I've seen a lady riding a horse bareback with only a halter and lead rope, at a dead run, heading to the barn. She fell off, hit her head and ended up with a very severe skull fracture that took 6 months to recover from. Thankfully, her loose horse was in its own pasture. What would happen to your horse if you became unable to take care of it in an emergency. Would he stand by you until help came (if anyone knew where to look for you - another topic to think about!)? Would he run through the woods, get caught in brush or an old barbed-wire fence? Would he run out onto the highway? Think about the helmet question again. It's not just for "your" sake you wear one - but also your horse!
